"The Baby Album," the latest effort from Montclair independent heroes the Porchistas, is dedicated to the children of Eloise Spellman, the most famous victim of the 1967 Newark riots. She came to fame as a writer of unadorned, slightly cautious romantic ballads ("Secret," from "Clear Night," is the best of these), and it's on the second half of "Razzle Dazzle" where she distinguishes herself, dropping the jazzy affectations for the powerful "If I'm Honest" and casting her lot with political insurgents in "The Hidden Ones." The more assertive "The Ol' Razzle Dazzle" pairs her with like-minded Aussie singer-songwriter Butterfly Boucher, who co-produced and co-wrote its slickest tracks: "Set Me on Fire" and "Unashamed Desire." These catchy singalongs - which are sure to score a television show soon - suggest the two artists have been listening to lots of Adele unlike most of the singers who have been borrowing from "21," Higgins has the pipes to turn the trick. Higgins has been missing in action since the 2008 stateside release of the tuneful but anodyne "On a Clear Night," an album she cut with producer Mitchell Froom. So it's a fine time for the re-emergence of Missy Higgins, who just might be the best vocalist Down Under. Gotye topped the charts worldwide Kimbra and Kate Miller-Heidke both released strong, colorful collections. It's been an excellent year for Australian pop singers.
